What Hoglund lacks in velocity he makes up for with extension on his delivery. However, it was not enough to protect him from facing righties as that group of hitters hit .344/.406/.705 against him because he is essentially a fastball/sweeper guy against them. The righty also struggled away from Sutter Field allowing 8 of his 10 homers on the season. Making matters worse, Hoglund came down with a labral tear in his hip in early June and missed the rest of the regular season in recovery. That surgery can take up to nine months to recover from, if all goes well. The other end of that possibility is Alex Cobb last year, who had the same surgery and never pitched in 2025 after several failed rehab stints. Hoglund can safely be ignored on draft day, and even after, until he finds a better third pitch against righties to avoid a future as a long reliever in a tough home environment. Read Past Outlooks

The Athletics announced Thursday that Hoglund has been diagnosed with a lumbar spine strain.

The back injury is apparently the bigger issue for Hoglund, who also missed time during spring training with a knee injury. The right-hander was officially placed on the 15-day injured list this week and will miss at least the first couple weeks of the season. Hoglund made his MLB debut last year, registering a 6.40 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB across 32.1 innings.
