Headed to free agency
Cabrera cleared waivers and opted for free agency Monday.
ANALYSIS
Cabrera served as one of Toronto's more reliable bullpen arms during the 2024 season, cruising to a 3.00 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with a 48:29 K:BB in his first 66 appearances (60.0 innings) before surrendering five runs in his final three outings of the year to inflate his ERA to 3.59. He shouldn't have much trouble latching on elsewhere heading into his age-28 season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
2020
Cabrera used a slight change in pitch mix and a velocity gain to earn the trust of the Cardinals in high-leverage situations in 2021. First, he increased his sinker usage from 5.8 percent in 2020 to 16.2 percent in 2021. The result was a 42% groundball rate, which helped Cabrera limit his HR/9 to 0.4. Combining his ability to keep the ball in the yard and a solid 26% strikeout rate, Cabrera recorded 28 holds. Of his 71 appearances, 32 came in the seventh inning and 44 came when the Cardinals were within two runs of their opponent. However, even as the Cardinals sought to identify a reliable closer for much of the season, Cabrera did not record a save in 2021 due in large part to his continued struggles with control (12.2 BB%). Though that mark will likely have to improve for him to become a full-time closer, he could reasonably enter the season as the Cardinals' second option to pick up saves behind Giovanny Gallegos.

Verdict coming soon
The appeal for Cabrera's three-game suspension was heard Monday, and Blue Jays manager John Schneider said a decision should be announced within the "next couple of days, per Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old received the suspension for his role in an altercation with infielder Jose Caballero during Saturday's game against the Rays, but the left-hander remains available to pitch while the appeals process plays out. The incident wasn't overly serious as no punches were thrown, so Cabrera could get a game or two taken off the ban.
