2026 Fantasy Outlook
Valdez's 2025 season was truncated by a dislocated shoulder in May which required surgery thus ending his season. He was only recently cleared to resume hitting in the offseason, so it is unclear whether he will be ready for camp in February. Shoulder injuries are tough on batters the first year out, and while the injury was to his non-throwing shoulder, it is the back shoulder for his left-handed swing. He is only eligible at first base on draft day, and he was already light on power so 2026 relegates him to reserve NL-Only consideration or draft-and-hold leagues in the end game to see if there is anything left in his bat which has quite honestly not shown much in recent seasons. Analysis
Valdez was limited to just 102 plate appearances with the Pirates in 2025 before suffering a season-ending dislocated left shoulder in May, but after playing in the Dominican Winter League during the offseason, he received a clean bill of health heading into the spring. Despite offering the ability to play multiple infield positions, Valdez status as a left-handed hitter likely limited his appeal as a bench bat for the Pirates. Valdez will get the chance to play regularly at Indianapolis to begin the season and could emerge as a strong-side platoon option for the Pirates at some point in 2026 if Pittsburgh loses an everyday infielder to an injury.

Valdez spent the last two seasons on Boston's carousel of second basemen. During his time with the organization, the lefty-hitting middle infielder showed pop potential, swatting 16 and 17 home runs between Triple-A and MLB in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Last season in the majors, he was better-than-average in hard-hit percentage (41.8), barrel percentage (9.2) and exit velocity (89.4). Those peripherals apparently intrigued the Pirates into giving up a minor-league reliever for Valdez, who joins a crowded infield. Nick Gonzalez finished out 2024 as the primary second baseman and entered camp as the putative starter in 2025.
