2026 Fantasy Outlook
We know an organization, or a fantasy team, can never have too much pitching. That said, any of the non Fab-Five pitchers in Seattle are tough to forecast for fantasy purposes because the Seattle rotation is as set in stone as any rotation could be this winter. Hancock and Logan Evans are competing for the Alert 5 spot in Tacoma should something happen to one of the others. Hancock is practicing for the role by preparing to come to camp as a starting pitcher this spring after working in a swingman role this past season. The workload should not be a problem, as Hancock has worked 98, 155 and 134.2 innings respectively each of the past three seasons, but Hancock's stuff may not play up as well with extra exposure at the big league level. Stuff+ likes his slider but considers all his other offerings below average. Hancock is more of a draft-and-hold target, because there is no doubt he will be pitching major league innings at some point in 2026, but when and where remains to be seen. Read Past Outlooks
Part of piggyback plan Saturday
Hancock will be used out of the bullpen in Saturday's game in Cleveland as part of the latter half of a piggyback arrangement with starter Logan Gilbert, Cameron Van Til of 710 AM Seattle Sports reports.
Analysis
Manager Dan Wilson announced last week that the Mariners would maintain a five-man rotation through the All-Star break but keep all six of their starters involved by using two in a piggyback arrangement every sixth game. After Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo worked in tandem last Friday versus Boston, Gilbert and Hancock will be paired together this weekend. Assuming their usage mimics that of Miller and Castillo from last week, Gilbert will likely cover around five innings and 70-to-80 pitches, while Hancock steps in to handle the final four frames. The setup will likely lessen Hancock's fantasy appeal this week, though managers may have already been leaning toward keeping him on their benches anyway. After submitting a 2.74 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through his first 13 starts, Hancock turned in his worst outings of the season in his last two starts, giving up a combined 11 earned runs on 13 hits and two walks in 9.1 innings while taking losses against the Nationals and Red Sox.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
Hancock was the Mariners' "sixth starter" last season, mostly filling in for Bryan Woo from time to time when Woo's elbow acted up. He wound up making 12 starts and was thoroughly underwhelming with a 4.75 ERA (5.69 FIP) and lowly 14.7 percent strikeout rate. Control is a strong suit for Hancock, but if you're going to be so feeble at missing bats you'd better generate lots of ground balls and/or soft contact and the right-hander does neither of those things. Hancock has the pedigree of a No. 6 overall pick and former top-100 prospect, but he's never really looked like anything more than a potential back-end starter and his performance thus far at the big-league level suggests he might not even reach that level.
