Altavilla cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Omaha.
ANALYSIS
The Royals dropped Altavilla from their 40-man roster immediately upon activating him from the 60-day IL on Thursday, but he'll remain within the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 31-year-old righty has allowed six runs in only 3.2 major-league innings this season, though he's been more effective in Triple-A, pitching to the tune of a 4.11 ERA through 35 frames.

Stat Review
How does Dan Altavilla compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).

2017
Altavilla began the season in the late-inning mix with Mariners closer Yoshihisa Hirano unavailable, and he notched a save in his second outing. Things trended down from there as he gave up at least one earned run in five of 11 outings before being dealt to the Padres at the trade deadline in a multi-player swap. At the time, Altavilla sported a 7.71 ERA and 1.63 WHIP with three homers in 11.2 innings. He fared better with San Diego, working mostly in low-leverage scenarios. Altavilla averages 97 mph on his fastball, but he lacks command and control, as evidenced by 12 walks in 20.1 innings along with the three homers. His ERA estimators peg him roughly a run and half lower than his 5.57 mark last season, but even low-to-mid 4.00s is high for a reliever, even with a 27.0 K%. A live arm bears watching, and the Padres have a good track record fixing relievers, but for now, Altavilla isn't fantasy material.
Altavilla battled forearm issues in 2018 and struggled out of the gate in 2019. At one point last summer it was feared he might be headed for Tommy John surgery, but it turned out that his UCL was not damaged, fortunately. The right-hander made it back to Seattle to pitch nine innings over the final month of the season, thriving in that small sample (35 batters faced) with a 25.7 K-BB%. Altavilla brings the heat with a fastball that sits 96-97 and a slider that averages close to 88 mph. Harnessing that quality stuff has been a struggle and his 2018 stint with the Mariners was marred by a 17.7 BB%. The full big-league track record here does little to excite, but the team's bullpen is wide open and Altavilla has one of the more electric arms among the relief corps. The promise of the stuff may be worth a dart in the reserve rounds of AL-only leagues.
The 26-year-old Altavilla is a somewhat interesting arm made more interesting by the fact that the Mariners tore it down this winter, leaving the back end of the bullpen pretty wide open. Anthony Swarzak is the most proven option right now, but Swarzak could be traded at any time. So far, a lack of control has held Altavilla back at the highest level. He was especially wild in his 22 appearances for Seattle last season, posting a 17.7% walk rate, but he was able to overcome the free passes to a large extent with strikeouts (27.1 K%) and by inducing a lot of playable contact (13.6 LD%). He threw his fastball at 96 mph on average and got swings and misses with the slider. The track record on the farm suggests the final piece of the puzzle may never come, but if Altavilla can rein in his repertoire even a little, he could carve out a prominent role among Seattle's relief corps.
Look up "average" in the dictionary and you will see a snapshot of Altavilla's 2017 season. The right-hander averaged 10.0 K/9, which was good but certainly not great for a bullpen arm in this day and age, and the benefits of that swing and miss were offset to a large extent by the walks (3.9 BB/9) and homers (1.74 HR/9). When it was all said and done, Altavilla had a 0.0 fWAR. He will have a tough time curtailing the homers with a 46.9 flyball percentage and 35.4 percent hard-hit rate. Altavilla throws hard and he has high-leverage experience on the farm -- he's racked up 22 saves between Double- and Triple-A over the past two season -- but he only earned two holds in 41 appearances with the big club last year and advancement will be difficult with Juan Nicasio joining Seattle's bullpen ranks in the offseason.
A fifth-round draft pick out of Mercyhurst back in 2014, Altavilla was one of the biggest surprises for the Mariners in 2016. After two seasons as a middling starting pitching prospect in the organization, the 24-year-old converted to being a reliever and flourished. In 56.2 innings with Double-A Jackson, he posted an excellent 1.91 ERA and 1.10 WHIP to go with 16 saves and an excellent 65:22 K:BB. Much to everyone's astonishment, the right-hander was promoted straight to the big leagues in late August, and to shock people even more, he continued to thrive. He allowed just one run in 12.1 innings of work while putting up a 10:1 K:BB in the big leagues. With his upper-90s fastball and biting slider, it seems like his repertoire is built for a late-inning role, a position he very well could claim with a strong spring showing.
