Murphy will find it easier to earn high-leverage opportunities in Chicago after an offseason trade from Boston, but he's unlikely to be the favorite for saves even in his new home. His 3.12 ERA last season came with a much worse 4.59 SIERA, and even if he avoids ERA regression, a lefty who gets groundballs like he does is the sort of pitcher who tends to find himself in the seventh or eighth inning rather than the ninth. Murphy made a promising transition from minor-league starter to major-league reliever in 2023 and was headed for the same role in 2024, but a spring elbow injury altered that plan. The injury turned out to be ligament damage, and the left-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in April. He was activated from the 60-day injured list in November, but it's too soon for him to be considered an option to start the season in what will be a new bullpen mix in 2025. Murphy could be ready to go by midseason, but Boston isn't counting on him for a role.
