2026 Fantasy Outlook
Petty spent most of the 2025 season in the minors with Triple-A Louisville but made his major-league debut against the Cardinals on April 30. Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, he was rocked for nine runs on seven hits and two walks over just 2.1 innings. He took the loss in each of his major-league appearances in 2025, with June 21 against St. Louis being his last outing with the Reds before being sent back to Triple-A. Petty didn't fare much better in Louisville, and after his last demotion from the majors he posted a horrific 8.87 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 67.0 minor-league innings while logging a measly 6.7 K/9. There doesn't appear to be a clear pathway to a spot on the Opening Day roster for Petty, though he could be called up to the majors from time to time to provide a spot start when the rotation needs an extra day off. 2024 Fantasy Outlook
Acquired from Minnesota for Sonny Gray prior to the 2022 season, Petty has slowly trended up and reached Double-A late last season as a 20-year-old. He had his innings managed carefully, with his season intentionally delayed a month and every start capped at four innings, but the talented righty made it through healthy and was working on adding even more velocity to his fastball this offseason. He has touched triple digits in the past, but dialed back his in-game velocity a couple years ago to sit around 93-95 mph with his fastball in favor of improved strike throwing. Indeed, his 5.5 percent walk rate last year was elite for a pitcher his age with his caliber of stuff. The fastball is just an average pitch (for now), but he spots it well and has a plus slider and above-average changeup to put hitters away. Petty is a clear starting pitcher who could move quickly to the majors, but his eventual home park should cap his upside. Nonetheless, if he does show improved velocity this year, he will continue to climb up rankings.
