Tromp signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Wednesday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Analysis
Tromp elected free agency Saturday after being DFA'd by Atlanta and will now return to the Orioles, with whom he spent a brief period of time last season. The 31-year-old backstop owns just a .578 OPS through 87 plate appearances at Triple-A this year, though he could be called up to the majors soon with Adley Rutschman (hamstring) and Samuel Basallo (wrist) both battling injuries.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2021
Tromp was Atlanta's second catcher at times last season when either Sean Murphy or Travis d'Arnaud were unavailable, which led to 16 starts and 54 plate appearances. Given that he's one of only two catchers currently on its 40-man roster (Murphy being the other), Tromp appears in line to serve as the No. 2 backstop in 2025, though top prospect Drake Baldwin figures to push him aside sooner rather than later. Tromp hit well at Triple-A Gwinnett last season, but he's 30 and it would take a rash of injuries for him to find himself in the lineup regularly.
Tromp has spent most of his career to date in the Reds organization, but became a minor-league free agent after the 2019 season and landed a minor-league contract with San Francisco in January of 2020. He ended up joining the Giants a few days into the season and stuck around despite appearing overmatched at the plate, walking once and striking out 20 times in 64 PA. The Giants non-tendered him in December and then brought him back a week later, but with Buster Posey, Curt Casali and Joey Bart ahead of him on the depth chart, Tromp faces an uphill battle. Clearly, his reacquisition was about adding organizational depth. If those three names in front of him all get injured or must be quarantined, Tromp might have a short run of utility in two-catcher leagues, but do not expect sustained success.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Chance to seize backup job?
CAtlanta Braves  AAA
November 5, 2024
Atlanta declined Travis d'Arnaud's club option for 2025 on Monday, which could open the door for Tromp to serve as the club's No. 2 catcher next season, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com.
Analysis
Starter Sean Murphy played a lesser role in 2024 due to ineffectiveness and injury, but Atlanta wasn't willing to pay the $8 million option for d'Arnaud. Prospect Drake Baldwin made his way to the Triple-A level this year, but it's unclear if the organization is willing to promote him to serve as a reserve option. Tromp doesn't have extensive big-league experience with just 59 games played across parts of five seasons, but the 29-year-old could serve as a veteran backup until Baldwin is called up.
