Cesar Salazar

30-Year-Old CatcherC
Houston Astros AAA
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Salazar has seen limited opportunities in the majors, with most of his playing time over the last three seasons taking place in Triple-A with Sugar Land. He's appeared in just 36 major-league games from 2023 to 2025, but he is projected to be the Astros' backup catcher behind Yainer Diaz for 2026 after Victor Caratini inked a two-year deal with the Twins in January. Diaz has played at least 143 regular-season games in each of the last two seasons, but Salazar should see more games this year than the 11 he logged in 2025. Read Past Outlooks

Salazar cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Salazar was designated for assignment Wednesday, but the 30-year-old catcher will remain within the Astros' organization. He could be called upon if Yainer Diaz or Christian Vazquez sustain an injury.

Primed for No. 2 gig?
CHouston Astros  AAA
December 12, 2025
According to Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros could begin 2026 with Salazar as their backup catcher.
Analysis
The 29-year-old played in 36 games for Houston across the past three seasons, but he could take on a larger role in 2026 with Victor Caratini hitting free agency. It's possible the Astros attempt to sign another catcher to back up Yainer Diaz, but if that doesn't work out, Salazar is positioned for a bigger workload next year.
