The Mariners placed Vargas on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a right lat strain.
Analysis
Vargas threw 77 innings of relief for the Mariners in 2025 and was expected to handle an important role out of the bullpen once again in 2026. However, his season debut will be pushed back at least two weeks as he tends to a strained lat. Cole Wilcox was called up from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2019
Vargas didn't pitch at all in 2020 because of the pandemic or in 2021 following Tommy John surgery. He had been a starter previously but came back in relief in 2022, eventually earning his first big-league promotion in September following a nice run at Triple-A Columbus (although, he didn't make an appearance for the Guardians). Vargas was then traded to the Diamondbacks over the offseason and it appears they plan to keep him in the bullpen. The 23-year-old has upside in the role with a fastball that can reach triple digits and a hard-biting slider. Vargas might even be a deep sleeper for saves on an Arizona club which is unsettled in the back-end of the bullpen, although he obviously still has plenty to prove.
A 6-foot-3, 180-pound righty who touched 99 mph with his fastball while flashing a wipeout slider as an 18-year-old last year, Vargas is one of the trendiest pitching prospects in the lower levels. He walked 14 batters in his first four AZL outings (12.2 innings), but only walked seven in his final six appearances (21.2 innings). With more strikes came more contact, but when he was commanding his fastball, he was dominant, as evidenced by his penultimate start of the year when he struck out nine over 4.1 scoreless innings. His fastball and breaking ball already project as 70-grade offerings, but he will need to continue to work on his changeup while showing he can hold up under a starter's workload. Vargas has already had Tommy John surgery (signed on July 2, 2016, did not debut until late June of 2018). His velocity is obviously fine. If he shows improved command/control in his second year back, his stock will skyrocket.

Analysis
It's uncertain when it may happen, but Seattle has already called up Taylor Saucedo to the practice squad as a potential roster replacement.
