Hits walk-off single Tuesday
Valenzuela went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Phillies.
Analysis
Valenzuela failed to reach base safely in his first three plate appearances, but the rookie catcher came up clutch with an RBI single in the ninth that brought the game-winning run home. Valenzuela has been effective at the plate this season and has gone 7-for-18 (.389) with seven RBI, five extra-base hits and four runs scored over his last six games. Alejandro Kirk (thumb) is on track to return from the 60-day injured list Friday, but the Blue Jays might keep Valenzuela on the 26-man roster rather than send him down to the minors, though Tyler Heineman does not have any options remaining.

Leg up on Heineman?
Valenzuela's recent play has given him an advantage over Tyler Heineman for the Blue Jays' backup catcher job once Alejandro Kirk returns from the 10-day injured list, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com relays.
Analysis
Valenzuela and Heineman have split duties behind home plate since Kirk landed on the 10-day IL in early April due to a fractured left thumb. Kirk was recently cleared to resume hitting and could be back with the team in late May, leaving the Blue Jays with a decision as to who they will retain for backup duties. Heineman doesn't have any minor-league options left, but Matheson notes that Valenzuela has been playing better both at the plate and defensively and has earned praise from pitchers such as Trey Yesavage. That could be enough for Valenzuela to stick around on the big-league roster if the rookie can maintain his level of play.
