The Diamondbacks non-tendered Hughes on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Although Hughes put up a 2.03 ERA in 48.2 Triple-A innings, he struggled during his time with the big-league squad, logging an 8.15 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over 17.2 frames. The 28-year-old reliever will now look to turn things around with a new organization, though he may start off the season in the minors once again.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Hughes emerged as a pleasant surprise after Chicago traded closer David Robertson and his presumed replacement, Scott Effross, at the deadline last year. The southpaw made his big league debut last May and immediately made an impression with five strikeouts over 1.2 innings in his first outing. Hughes leveraged a 93-mph fastball with plenty of horizontal break and a filthy slider that produced a 49% whiff rate to strike out 68 over 57.2 innings for a solid 10.6 K/9. He racked up 57 appearances to become the first Cubs rookie to pitch in 50-plus games since 2014. However, his 11.1% barrel rate was poor (4th percentile), while his 8.8% walk rate and 38.3% hard hit percentage were also below average. Hughes still maintained solid ratios while leading the Cubs with eight saves after the trade deadline, but don't count on a leading bullpen role in 2023 just yet with Chicago looking to spend this winter.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Revolving door at closer for CHC?
Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network believes the Cubs will feature a revolving door at closer this season.
ANALYSIS
Andracki identifies Hughes as the best bet to get the call if the Cubs have the lead in the ninth inning Opening Day but goes on to note that the 27-year-old is the only left-hander currently assured of a big-league bullpen spot. Brad Boxberger, Michael Fulmer, Rowan Wick and Adbert Alzolay are among the right-handers who could ultimately factor into the saves mix this season for Chicago. It's likely to be a frustrating situation for fantasy managers.
