Reaches minor-league deal
PArizona Diamondbacks  AAA
February 25, 2025
Bielak agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Bielak gave up 17 earned runs over 29.2 innings in the majors between the Astros and Athletics last season. Most of his time was spent in the minors, however, where he still struggled with a 6.08 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 66.2 frames. He'll now attempt to bounce back during spring camp with the Diamondbacks, though his recent performance will most likely keep him in an organizational depth role.

Bielak made 13 starts for Houston in 2023 compiling a 3.83 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 6.97 K/9 in 80 innings pitched. The 27-year-old filled in admirably for an injury plagued Astros rotation for most of the season before the wheels fell off in late July and he was demoted to Triple-A. With Houston's top four in the rotation set, Bielak is on the outside looking in at a rotation spot with J.P. France and Jose Urquidy likely ahead of him in the pecking order. The righty's best path to a roster spot could be as a long reliever out of the bullpen meaning he'll likely be limited to a streaming role for fantasy managers unless a rotation spot opens up in season.
There are two competing theories in life; either do one thing very well, or do many things decently. Bielak falls in the latter category as he does not have any one particularly great skill or pitch, but he can throw a handful of pitches and work the zone with regularity. As a rookie in 2020, Bielak took his lumps as he struggled to consistently locate his pitches, resulting in a combination of too many walks, hittable pitches and home runs. Dean Wormer told Blutarsky that fat, drunk and stupid was a hell of a way to go through life, and would tell Bielak lots of walks, hits and homers is not the way to succeed in baseball. Blutarsky eventually went on to become President of the United States, so Bielak may eventually win the Cy Young and MVP in the same season. That just isn't happening in 2021.
Bielak is a typical Astros pitching prospect, featuring a high-spin four-seam fastball, a plus circle change along with a developing curve and slider. The organization has made a science of working to a pitcher's strengths, giving Bielak a chance to make it as a back-end starter despite lacking a dominant pitch. The righthander began 2019 with Double-A Corpus Christi, posting a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 36 innings, allowing just three homers. His home run rate picked up after a promotion to Triple-A Round Rock as Bielak surrendered 10 dingers in 85.2 frames, throwing the same ball used in the majors. That said, he fanned 86, a good showing for a 23-year old in his first stint at Triple-A. Bielak is ticketed for a return to the Express. He still has starting aspirations but needs to continue honing his secondary offerings. A 2020 callup is possible as a spot-starter or bulk reliever.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Joining Astros soon?
PHouston Astros  AAA
July 2, 2023
Bielak didn't make his scheduled start Saturday for Triple-A Sugar Land, which could indicate the Astros are considering him to start soon, reports Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old has a 4.37 ERA across 47.1 big-league innings this year and was demoted to Sugar Land in mid-June. The Astros demoted Ronel Blanco and had Shawn Dubin start Sunday, which leaves the team with a question mark in its rotation with a week before the beginning of the All-Star break, especially with Framber Valdez nursing an ankle issue. It's likely only a matter of time before Bielak receives another shot with Houston this season, and that opportunity could come sooner rather than later.
