In 95 innings as a major leaguer, Shipley has allowed 19 home runs. That's not so good, Al. When you combine that with a 4.1 walk rate, it's no wonder his career ERA is 5.40. He has had a below-average strikeout rate at both Triple-A and the major leagues, which has further compounded his problems getting batters out. There are innings in which his stuff looks good, particularly his over-the-top breaking ball. Yet, the inconsistent command continues to plague him. The job for Arizona is to find Shipley a role that best fits his limited skill set, or change him into something else by adjusting his repertoire or his arm angle. Something has to give, because the current version of Shipley is not going to last long at the major-league level. The pieces -- the pitches and the athleticism -- are all there, but they have not yet been fit together properly.
