Burkhalter had been stuck on the IL since the end of spring training due to back spasms, but he's been given a clean bill of health after making four rehab appearances in the lower rungs of the minors. He could eventually rejoin the Gwinnett bullpen later this season, but Burkhalter will first look to knock off some rust in the Southern League.

According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Atlanta didn't add Burkhalter to its 40-man roster ahead of Tuesday's Rule 5 protection deadline.
Analysis
The right-hander isn't exactly a top prospect for Atlanta, but it wouldn't have been surprising if the organization elected to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft after he posted a 3.77 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett last year. Even if he goes unselected during the Rule 5 Draft, Burkhalter should have a chance of making his MLB debut at some point in 2026.
