2026 Fantasy Outlook
There were a number of Pirates pitchers whose names were floated around at the trade deadline, but it was Falter who ended up being shipped out to the Royals. The 28-year-old southpaw was a serviceable back-end starter for Pittsburgh, posting a 7-5 record in 22 starts with a 3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 70:39 K:BB across 113.1 innings. However, it was a much different story in Kansas City, where Falter yielded 15 runs across 12 innings and was moved over to the bullpen before being shut down in late August due to a biceps contusion. He should be available for spring training, but there is uncertainty around what Falter's role will be in 2026. Last year, he finished in the bottom 20 percentile of qualified pitchers in whiff rate, strikeout rate, xERA, xBA and groundball rate, so Falter wouldn't provide much value in roto leagues even if he was part of the Royals' rotation by Opening Day. Strong relief outing
Falter allowed no hits or walks across three scoreless innings in Tuesday's Cactus League loss to the Dodgers. He struck out five.
Analysis
Falter was originally slated to start Tuesday's contest, but manager Matt Quatraro instead deployed the southpaw out of the bullpen to evaluate his versatility and adaptability, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Falter responded with his best outing of the spring, entering in the fourth inning and striking out five of the nine batters he faced while averaging 93.6 mph on his fastball, up from 92.1 mph last season. The 28-year-old appears to be on the outside looking in for a spot in the Royals' rotation, especially if the club sticks with a traditional five-man group, so his ability to pitch effectively in relief could boost his chances of making the roster as a left-handed bullpen option.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
Falter got his most extended opportunity as a starter in 2024 by taking 28 turns through the rotation as a member of the Pirates. His 4.43 ERA and 1.29 WHIP were both unremarkable, and those results were backed by similarly uninspiring skills. His strikeout rate dipped to 16.5 percent, and his career 9.2 percent swinging strike rate doesn't suggest there's much additional upside. The positive from his profile was his ability to blend a relatively high 42.1 percent flyball rate with a more muted 1.1 HR/9. That could offer a streaming opportunity in favorable pitcher's parks or power-deficient lineups, so long as Falter can stick in the rotation. The latter point is hardly a given with Johan Oviedo (elbow) likely to be back in the mix, as well as promising prospects such as Thomas Harrington, Braxton Ashcraft (forearm) and Bubba Chandler all likely to reach the majors at some point in 2025. All told, Falter should be on the radar for NL-only leagues, but his appeal in mixed formats should be a streamer at most.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Uncertain role for 2026 season
Falter has an uncertain role ahead of the start of the 2026 MLB season next week, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com.
Analysis
Falter is the odd man out in the rotation since the Royals have all of their five preferred options healthy and ready to roll, plus other names who could be used as serviceable depth. Thus, Falter will either be considered the sixth starter or will operate in a long-relief role out of the bullpen. Falter made 26 regular-season appearances and 24 starts in the 2025 regular season while pitching for the Royals and Pirates, posting a 4.45 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 125.1 innings.
