Stat Review
How does Austin Pruitt compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2018
2017
Pruitt experienced both a disappointing and unexpected 2020 campaign, a year in which he was supposed to compete for a spot in the starting rotation. He ultimately missed the entire season after undergoing surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his pitching elbow. Fortunately for Pruitt, he'll be back in 2021 after signing a one-year deal with Houston, though he may not be available for the early portion of the year, depending on his rehab. When the 31-year-old returns to health, he'll need to keep the ball in the park to achieve success. Pruitt posted an ugly 18.4% home run to fly ball ratio in 2019 while with the Rays. He'll need to compete with the likes of Luis Garcia, Jose Urquidy and Cristian Javier to crack the starting rotation for the Astros.
If you are a fan of spin rate, Pruitt is one of your favorites to follow. He has some good spin, particularly on his curveball, and worked both as a starter and a reliever in his rookie year. Oddly enough, he did much better as a starter as he held opponents to a .244 average and .293 OBP over eight starts with a 4.19 ERA. As a reliever, those numbers ballooned to a .350 average and .403 OBP. He was hurt by the long ball as a starter as eight of his 11 homers came in those outings. All in all, it was an odd year, but he showed enough to have a role on the Rays' 2018 staff, maybe even in the rotation should the team trade Jake Odorizzi or another starter.
Pruitt performed decently for Triple-A Durham, where he spent the entirety of the 2016 season as a starter. He made 28 starts in which he registered a 3.76 ERA and 3.53 FIP in 162.2 innings. The minor league veteran has earned as a reputation as a reliable strike thrower, which was demonstrated through his solid 1.5 BB/9 in 2016. On the other hand, his crucial need to throw strikes comes in part from an inability to miss a lot of bats, which has showed in his often unspectacular K/9 rates. He needs to prove last year's great 8.2 K/9 is more than a fluke. At 27 years old, Pruitt likely is what he is at this point in his career: a low-ceiling pitcher with the potential to eventually fill out the bottom of a rotation or serve as a swing man. Additionally, the Rays liked him enough to add him to their 40-man roster in the fall. AL-only owners should keep an eye on him, as he could be a replacement option if the Rays' rotation is hit by injuries.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Slated to debut this year
PHouston Astros  AAA
January 11, 2021
Pruitt (elbow) is expected to make his debut for the Astros "at some point this year," according to Jake Kaplan of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Pruitt underwent elbow surgery in September and, while he was cleared to begin throwing this week, he also tested positive for COVID-19 -- meaning he will have to endure another setback in his rehab process. Pruitt is not expected to be ready for Opening Day, but he is widely expected to contribute to the Astros' pitching staff at some point this season, though his role is yet to be determined.
