2026 Fantasy Outlook
It is incredible Toronto came within a centimeter of winning the World Series when you consider the team's primary offseason signing was a complete bust. Santander failed to launch anything in Toronto just one season off his career season, as he was hitting .179/.273/.304 through his first 209 plate appearances before a harsh collision with an outfield wall led to a shoulder injury that kept him on the injured list until the final week of the regular season. Santander got four games in with just one hit over those contests and eventually had to be yanked from the postseason roster in the ALCS due to back issues, which ended his season. It is expected big contracts in new places will struggle in year one, but even the biggest pessimist could not have imagined this type of season for Santander. Worse yet, for fantasy purposes, Santander has lost his outfield eligibility is most formats, so he is utility only. The silver lining is that his acquisition cost in drafts may be even lower than it should be considering his potential to rebound to a more realistic 2023 level of production assuming his body is done failing him in 2026. Slated for surgery
Manager John Schneider said Tuesday that Santander will undergo left labral surgery Wednesday and will miss roughly 5-6 months, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis
Santander was limited to just 54 regular-season games last year while battling injuries in his left shoulder and back. He said earlier in the offseason that he was feeling much better but later suffered a setback in January while ramping up his hitting progression, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca. The 31-year-old's recovery timeline leaves room for him to return before the end of the regular season, though that isn't likely to happen until after the All-Star break. With Santander out, the Blue Jays will likely rely on Nathan Lukes and Davis Schneider to start in left field for the first half of the season.

Santander could not have written a better script for his 2024 numbers as he heads into free agency. The switch-hitting slugger hit a career high 44 homers while also setting career highs in runs and RBI despite Lord Walltimore stealing a handful of homers from him. Santander signed a long-term deal with Toronto, where he'll likely shift between the outfield and designated hitter. It's roughly a neutral park shift for Santander, who will now bat behind Vladimir Guerrero, but fantasy managers should view 2024 as a well-timed career year for Santander. He'll be adjusting to living in a new city, with new coaches and big expectations, so a step back to his pre-2024 levels seems likely. Still, he's on the short list of hitters projected by all projection systems to surpass 30 homers in 2025 and he should do so without tanking your batting average or on-base percentage.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Bounce-back season coming?
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said during the winter meetings that Santander is "going to be huge for us" during the 2026 season, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis
Santander was limited to only 54 regular-season games in 2025 due to a shoulder subluxation and a nagging lower-back problem, and he slashed just .175/.271/.294 with a 27.6 percent strikeout rate in those contests. The 31-year-old is healthy now and will be heading into the second year of a five-year, $92.5 million contract, so the Blue Jays will give him another opportunity to re-establish himself. Santander slashed .235/.308/.506 with 44 home runs and 102 RBI in 2024 in his final season with the Orioles.
