The Nationals selected Lara's contract from Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old is now shielded from the Rule 5 Draft. Lara spent the 2024 campaign split between High-A Wilmington and Harrisburg, finishing with a 3.34 ERA and 132:44 K:BB over 134.2 frames. He'll likely begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Rochester.

2020 Fantasy Outlook
The top pitching prospect available in the July 2, 2019 international signing class, Lara signed with the Nationals for $1.25 million and immediately turned heads in the fall instructional league. Even with a low-effort delivery, he was sitting at 92-95 mph with his fastball as a 16-year-old. Other than the fact he is a pitching prospect set to make his pro debut as a 17-year-old, the biggest risk factor with Lara is his weight. He is already 6-foot-4, 217 pounds, and while he should eventually be sitting in the upper-90s with his heater, he could get too big to consistently repeat his delivery and command his electric arsenal. His slurvy breaking ball plays well off his fastball, and while no pitcher his age should be judged on the quality of their changeup, his is on the right track to be a quality offering. Look for him to debut as the youngest pitcher in the Gulf Coast League. He has frontline upside.

Making progress with consistency
PWashington Nationals  AAA
April 1, 2020
Lara has made a good impression on Nationals minor-league pitching coordinator Brad Holman, Byron Kerr of MASN Sports reports. "His fastball is mid-90s mph and just once and a while he will like overthrow it a tick and catch a little misfire and yank it left," Holman said this week. "He's just learning how to make adjustments and how to get back on track when he's off. But he makes a lot of really good pitches, too. It's (all about) just becoming more consistent for him and, of course, he is just a baby. He just turned 17."
