Elects free agency
Schunk cleared waivers Friday and elected to become a free agent, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.
Analysis
Schunk appeared in just 16 games for the Rockies in 2025 and managed to slash just .188/.188/.219 across 33 plate appearances. His Triple-A performance (.829 OPS over 90 games) was much better, however, and could be enough to buy the 28-year-old infielder another opportunity this winter -- likely on a minor-league contract.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2021
2020
The Rockies selected Schunk in the second round of the 2019 first-year player draft (No. 62 overall). After spending all 2023 with Triple-A Alburquerque, Schunk returned to the Isotopes last season before getting his big-league callup in late June. He played sparingly, filling in at second and third base with a taste of shortstop. Schunk appeared overmatched, recording a 31.6 percent strikeout rate and 4.1 percent walk rate. His batted ball metrics were poor. Schunk's .291/.346/.464 line in 185 Triple-A games may seem encouraging, but he played in one of the most hitter-friendly venues in the best league for offense. While anyone wearing a Rockies uniform warrants consideration, there are better dart throws than Schunk.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Debut not likely soon?
According to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, Schunk may not be close to being called up for his major-league debut.
Analysis
Schunk is a fringe prospect that posted a .290/.350/.461 slash line in his first taste of the Triple-A level last season. Now 26 years old, the third baseman has followed up with seven homers, 11 steals and an .808 OPS through 69 games in 2024, though it's worth remembering he's playing in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He's also not on the 40-man roster, so the Rockies would need to free up some space in order to bring him up. Still, he's hitting well in the highest level of the minors, and that could be enough to get him a shot before the end of 2024 given Colorado is competing for the worst record in the NL.
